Last Day of Chess Club

by Mark Adler, Chess Club volunteer

Today (June 7) is the last day of the Paton Chess Club.

It’s been a great year and I really enjoyed working with your sons and daughters. Chess can be so much fun, and I hope that over the summer they can continue to play with family and friends.

I recommend a free Chess app for the iPhone/iPad that’s good for playing and learning.  You play against the iPhone/iPad or against a live opponent, and the iPhone/iPad will recommend moves.  It’s called “Chess,” although a lot of games have that name, it’s by Christophe Théron.  Here’s the link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/chess/id522314512.

PS- I am a parent of a 4th grader and we will be moving on from Paton.  This Chess Club has been my personal experiment which the Paton PTO has graciously supported.  But without me at Paton, there will be nobody to run the club next school year.  If you’d like to help next year, please tell me or the PTO’s volunteer coordinator, Sarah Merolle <smerolle@verizon.net>.

Chess Club Announcement

Chess clubBecause of the snow day, Chess Club is obviously cancelled.

Today was the deadline for submitting registrations for the new session which begins next week. HOWEVER, due to the snow day, the deadline will be extended to Monday March 11.

By Wednesday, March 13, students and parents will be informed on whether they’ll be in the club for the next session. If we have too many registrations, we’ll have to hold a lottery.

Chess Club 2nd Session

The Second Session of the Paton Chess Club is coming!

This will mostly be group play time with occasional instruction.

The club will meet Fridays after school until 4pm.
The club will run for six weeks: March 15 to April 26 (but not during April vacation).
If it works out, we’ll run a third (final) session after that.

Registration priority will be given to third and fourth graders.  Paton students only.
Due to limited space, we may use a lottery to fill seats; students not selected in the lottery will have their checks returned and will have higher priority if there’s another session.  Second graders may register if space permits.  First graders will have to wait until next year.

Software recommendation: We suggest — for home use — downloading the free iPad app “Chess Free.”

Chess Club Coming?

The Paton PTO is considering forming an afterschool chess club if we get enough student interest and parent volunteers. There would be play time and instruction.

Before we organize the event, however, we must know if there are parent volunteers who could either:

  • help teach basic chess; or
  • help supervise the students.

We don’t expect chess masters, just folks who know how to play the game adequately and can coach children on the basics.

The club would meet Fridays after school for six weeks: January 25 to March 8 (but not during February vacation).  If it works out, we would run another session after that.

Registration priority would be given to third and fourth graders, due to limited space and there would be a cost for each student of $20 per student for the entire six-week club.
